The Build !

which van to choose ?

While there aren't that many choices out there for a Camper Van conversion, the "Big Three" (Mercedes or Dodge Sprinter, Ford Transit, RAM Promaster) all quite similar, but also offer certain differences which can

EVALUATE YOUR NEEDS

While there are in my opinion, more choices out there than we can think of, the "Big Three" (Mercedes or Dodge Sprinter, Ford Transit, RAM Promaster) remain without a doubt the preferred vehicle base for a Camper Van conversion. Unfortunately, at the time of my evaluation, I did not keep the Astros, Westfalias,Vanduras, and. So, my evaluation of these particular models will certainly not be as thorough as the other three.

What's your budget? Are you a handy mechanic? Will you be living in it or using it for a few weeks / year? Where will you be travelling? What are your comfort needs? Are you going to go offroad? What is the equipment you're looking for? These are all questions you'll have to ask yourself before investing either 4 000$ on a used 1985 GMC Vandura, 15 000$ on a used Westfalia, 40 000$ + on a Sprinter conversion, or 100 000$ + for a fully built Safari Condo or Pleasure Way.

the van for my needs : ram promaster

While my evaluation directed me towards the RAM Promaster model, keep in mind this doesn't mean it is the best option, nor the best choice for you. As I'm used to do when I'm creating a new product, I listed the requirements I wanted my van to have, and simply ended up choosing the van that had the best score.

My main requirements were :
1. Budget (in the low 20K, used) This made the choice much more easy since the Sprinters and newer Transits were out of my budget.
2. Width permitting to sleep sideways. (I'm 6'1")
3. City-friendly. (I wanted to be able to park in large metropolitan areas such as Montreal, Toronto, etc.)
3. Winter capable. Since home is still Quebec and the van would be my only car, getting stuck in snow every morning is not part of my adventure bucket-list.

Insulation !

Getting your van insulated. Biggest debate in the Camper Van Conversion world. Got so tired of reading about it and comparing products and techniques, I just gave up and bought the easy way out : 3M Thinsulate. Is it better than the rest? Time will tell.
